Weekly Winners - 1/4/09

Also - I'm looking for a little advice. These were taken with our old camera. Our NON-SLR camera. And now it seems I can go get a new camera. Any suggestions? We're trying to stay under $1000. My main problem with this old camera is that the flash washes out the people - and without it I can't capture the picture. Does that make sense?

Great shots, and I love the one of the dog. Just perfect.

I just use a little point and shoot, no flash but holding steady. Sorry I'm not much help, but I hope someone else can give you some advice. Look forward to seeing those shots, too!

We got the Nikon D40X with a 18-200mm VR lens the summer before Henry was born and LOVE it. (I'm currently looking at getting a new, faster lens to capture the portrait type photos I like.)

To avoid the flash face (a term Darr and I use when you get the picture with the nearby objects (usually faces) washed out and the background darkened), get a small flash to mount on the top of the camera and point the flash upwards to bounce the light off the ceiling instead of having it shoot out in front. (I'm fixing Henry breakfast right now but if you want the exact info on the flash we have, I can email it to you).

Costco has the Nikon D60 (the replacement for the D40x, which they no longer make) on sale for $699.99. The kit comes with two VR lenses that give you the same range as our one lens. And the VR (vibration reduction) is great. Particularly if you're at all shaky when holding a camera like I am.

When I was researching cameras I spent a lot of time looking at galleries online. Most of the time, when I compared the Nikon to the Canon photos, I preferred the Nikon shots. Also, Dooce's Armstrong started with a Nikon but has upgraded to a nicer Canon (I think the camera she uses now is around $2000-$3000.) I can't tell a difference between the shots she took with the Nikon D80 that she used to use and the Canon 5D she uses now so I'm guessing there is some finishing she does in Photoshop that allows her to get the same look with either camera.

New cameras are awesome so I'm very excited for you already. :)

I just got a Nikon D80. So far I think it takes nice pictures. The picture of the bottles and purse and with that camera on my blog for weekly winners. I bought it online from Ritz cameras for $700.

Awesome shots this week!! My fave though is the one of your youngest son playing w/the water thingie~so precious!

I just got a new camera from hubby & my sons for CHRISTmas & my b-day (which also happens to be CHRISTmas)~a Nikon D40 DSLR & am lovin' it so far. I'm normally a "Canon Girl" but I'm lovin' this Nikon. My Nikon was purchased @ Best Buy & they have awesome deals on cameras. My camera was a bundle deal & it included the camera, a 15-75mm lens & a 55-200mm lens~all for $599 plus tax!

You should check out Best Buy :) I've purchased all my cameras from them (the 1st 2 were Canons & then my Nikon). Good luck :) And congrats on getting a new camera :)
