For the past few years I've been toying with the idea of starting a book club with parents at my work. Those who would want to participate would choose a book, related to parenting and/or child development, and meet weekly to discuss chapters, etc. I've never been in a book club and I really have no idea how it all works. But I think it goes something like this, choose a book, read parts of the book, discuss the book. I'm sure I could find some more information online somewhere... if I needed it. This book club at work will not be starting anytime soon, maybe during the 2009-2010 school year, since this year and next I won't want to be leaving my kids at night any more than needed.
A few days ago Christie posted about the various books she's read to prepare herself for parenting (both the baby years and beyond). She asked for suggestions and I quickly gave two suggestions - "Einstein Never Used Flashcards" and "Toilet Training in Less Than One Day". [Which, by the way, took us 3 days, not less than 1] But then I started thinking about when I was pregnant with Quinn. I was taking classes towards a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. I had an awesome professor, Randi, who, once I learned I was having a boy, said, "You have to read 'Raising Cain'. It's a wonderful book not only for parents of boys, but for anyone who feels it is their responsiblity to help boys through their school years. So really, everyone in the class should read it." Believe it or not, I haven't read it yet. I spent the time reading all the First Year books and books for school. So now I'd like to read it. And to make a long story short -
Anyone interested in a book club type blog? We would have a separate blog, assign chapters to be read each week, and discuss those chapters...or something like that??? We would start with Raising Cain and then someone else could pick the next book... Anyone? Just leave a comment or shoot me an email: mccathy at comcast dot net Prior experience in a book club is not required, obviously, since I don't know what the heck I'm doing!

What a fantastic idea! I'd certainly love to try to read more. :)
And hey, I visited amazon.com after reading your comment with recommendations and ordered those books. Thanks!
I think it's a good idea...Of course, I rarely read anything but blogs. That is SO sad. I have an entire lists of books I WANT to read.
I'd love in on it. Though a teeny bit worried about actually getting a book read! But I could swap out blog time.
Another good book about raising and teaching boys is: The Mind of Boys by Michael Gurian and Kathy Stevens. He also wrote The Wonder of Boys, but I haven't read that. And he's written the Wonder of Girls for the parents of girls out there. Amy S.
